Six Mile Road

Salem, Michigan, 1971. Most villagers are still living in the conservative 1950’s, yet the city of Ann Arbor, just ten miles away, arouses the youth, spawns odd visitors, and heaves fresh new experiences at their doorsteps. Most of the homes and businesses line down Six Mile Road. The Salem Church built in 1888 with priceless stained-glass windows is a jewel. The adjacent parsonage is the bustling home of Pastor Evan Smith’s family. The quaint general store with its buzzing tea table is a gathering spot for the ladies. Across the railroad tracks, the Salem Airport cultivates dozens of Cessna pilots and parachuter clubs. At first look, you’d expect it to be a Thomas Kincade painting, but like its residents, it has a darker side and holds a rich history that makes the village a character of its own.
