September 1971 – 1972: Evan attempts to balance his career with the needs of 310 diverse villagers while store owner Barbra is determined to save them from his church.
Barbra competes with the ladies to become Salem’s Nielsen household when Evan sets up revival tent meetings with an Evangelist pushing villagers to give up their “hell-e-vision.”
EVAN's plans for a Sunday Celebration are dashed when BARBRA moves the parade up a day. DAVID plans to make money putting on a carnival but his friends decide to boycott when MARYANN discovers he used materials that were supposed to be for charity fundraiser.
After DAVID steals a wooden mask, he gets into trouble at school. EVAN and LORETTA aren't sure if his new friend RICK is to blame or the bewitched idol.
Barbra is thrilled to get some help at the store -- until she learns the employee she hired is black. After she lets the kid go, she learns about Salem's history during the underground railroad days. She is forced to look at her own biases.
When EVAN discovers escaped prisoners enroute to the “John Sinclair Freedom Rally” posing as homeless, he tries to talk them into trusting God, only to be used as a hostage. DAVID is accused of witchcraft when he performs a magic trick in Sunday School until it helps Evan escape.
When LORETTA wants the perfect Christmas like no other, she ignores a lump in her breast, only to discover she has advanced breast cancer. She submits to the horror that awaits with prayer, while DAVID learns that just because a miracle didn’t happen for someone else, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t believe.
